Absence Doesn't ALWAYS Make the Heart Grow Fonder: My Thoughts on SHRM Actions of Late

So the last months have been upheaval in our profession due to the SHRM/HRCI separation. The only other times I remember the HR community being this "moved" is when the SHRM Members for Transparency concerns where made public and the "I Hate HR" article was published. I know the later dates me a but but I have been passionate and incredibly supportive of the "Profession" society I have been a very active advocate for most of my business career.   As expected, over the last few days at #SHRM14, I have heard comments both positive and negative about both SHRM and HRCI. However, I consider myself to be a reasonable person and I don't take everyone's comments to heart. Nor do I believe everything I hear.  But (and not my first BUT) what I can't get over is the absence and uneasy feeling that has been so obviously present during this conference.  That absence is everything HRCI- PHR/SPHR/GPHR and so on.  HRCI,  who by the way, has been an organizati...

SHRM's New Baby Named!

As you read in my most recent posts, SHRM has announced new certifications that will be available in 2015.  Several have referred to the fiasco with the announcement and relationship with HRCI as a DIVORCE .  While that may or may not be true as the two organizations proceed, SHRM has announced the name of what I have referred to above as their new Baby.  They are the SHRM-CP (Society for Human Resources Management - Certified Professional) and SHRM-SCP (Society for Human Resources Management - SENIOR Certified Professional).  Here is what the logo's will look like: Of course, as a career long volunteer for SHRM, I don't mean that in a condescending way.  However, it should be treated as such due to the delicate situation that has been created between the two organizations and primarily within the community who is very concerned about the impression this makes on the non-HR community.  I know the latter, is by far my biggest concern as I have worked...

An Unfortunate Reality: SHRM & HRCI At Odds

Are they really or is this a chance for improvement for both of them?  I tend to think yes! Over the last week, I have participated in phone calls, read press releases, articles, and blog posts, as well as brief my local chapter members about the facts surrounding the SHRM Certification Announcement of May 12, 2014. During this time, I have stayed away from "as much as possible" communicating my personal opinions about the situation.  Now after all scheduled communications that I knew I would take part in have passed, it's time to let the cat out of the bag.  Well it's not as dramatic as all that but I do have a few opinions and suggestions to offer current and potential HRCI certificants regardless of your SHRM member status (because there are certificants who are not SHRM members).  My comments below are in no particular order. If you were planning to test this year for any of the HRCI certifications, do it!  Continue to be proud of your PHR,...

The MAC Doctor

The MAC Doctor I just noticed 7/28/14 that I did not post this summary. I think it was because my dad went in the hospital upon my return from this conference and I simply forgot. So even though it's over six months old and I am no longer the MAC rep, it may give those a taste of where SHRM, SHRM Foundation, and HRCI was last fall before the riff. Also, it may give State Directors thinking about the MAC position a taste of what to expect.  *********************** Written in October 2013: On my return from the SHRM Foundation Thought Leaders Retreat and the SHRM Strategy Conference where we had a chance to participate in our third in person Membership Advisory Council meeting, I have had a chance to do a little reflection on what we have accomplished so far this year. During the conference we had a chance to see Ben C speak about his 6th grade classmate which he referred to as the "MAC Doctor". Last night a few jokes were made about the MAC as it relates to McDonalds as...

Fall North Central SHRM MAC Update

The MAC Representatives participated in a conference call on September 17, 2013 with Elissa O'Brien, SPHR - SHRM Vice President of Membership, Amy Schabacker Dufrane,  Executive Director of the HR Certification Institute (HRCI),  and other SHRM Staff Members.  Amy provided HRCI's response to the MAC Reps report presented in June 2013. Her presentation showed HRCI is listening to the volunteer leaders and HRCI is working on meeting the volunteer leaders needs. Amy noted HRCI is working on a communication piece on how they plan to address the issues the volunteer leaders voiced in the MAC Survey. Once this document is received by the MAC Reps, we will provide to you.  Recently, volunteer leaders were asked to complete a second 2013 MAC Survey regarding "Professional Development".  We had over 700 volunteer leaders complete the survey. The MAC presented the findings to the  SHRM Staff during the SHRM Foundation Thought Leaders Retreat and SHRM St...

MAC Meetings with "the Boards" Feedback

First of all, thanks to all those who participated in the Spring 2013 MAC Survey and to all the SHRM State Council Directors in the North Central Region for electing me to serve you. The input we received was so valuable and made our jobs easier as representatives of our volunteer leaders and the members in the states we serve. The MAC Representatives met for an hour each with the HRCI Board, SHRM Foundation Board and SHRM's Board of Directors prior to the SHRM Annual Conference.  The MAC Reps expected to spend about 20 minutes with each board; however, they were so engaged and interested in the information that we had to share on behalf of the members that we were given additional time. Since our approach for collecting data was via survey, we were able to provide actual data and statistics to back up the information that we covered. Our methodology paid off, as the information we discussed was fact based and gave it credibility in the eyes of the board members. The MAC Sur...

SHRM NCR (North Central Region) MAC Update

It's been awhile since I wrote about the Membership Advisory Committee (MAC) for which I am proud to be part of this year.  The last update was in May and was the first official North Central Region Update . The original post from February:  What is the MAC? A "SHRM" Term  has risen to the most popular post on my blog site.  So thank you to those who felt it was a worthy read.  Having just returned from the annual SHRM conference in Chicago , I felt I owed my region (the North Central Region aka NCR) an update, especially since so many of you took time to fill out the survey sent out in the Spring. However, before I get into the results, I would just like to say that the hashtag I started a few years ago: #NorthCentralRegionRocks is one of the most accurate descriptors for the leaders in our region among any in the #SHRMLead stream, in my humble opinion, of course.  As I recall, the Ohio, Minnesota, and North Dakota state directors get my vote for "m...

2013 HRCI Approved HR Webinars - 2HRs Each

I finally got HRCI approval for the following 11 courses and we are working on at least one other regarding the upcoming Health Care Act (aka Obama Care) responsibilities that go into effect next year.   We have added two additional webinars this year.   If you have ideas for additional topics to add the list this year or next let me know.   I have the pre-approved provider designation through the end of next year.   I am hoping to grow the interest in order to justify its continuance from my perspective at least.   The highlighted sessions are new for 2013.   Here is a link to the full course catalog and all the items listed are linked individually.   I hope to see you in a session or two this year and PLEASE share with anyone you know in HR!   1.       05/09/13 - Conducting Employee Disciplinary Investigations 2.       05/23/13 - Affirmative Action Plan: Where ...

Messy House = SHRM Mission Impossible

The 1st in a series about Strategic Human Resources Management: Today, I began a new venture as a course developer and instructor of a brand spanking new Strategic Human Resources Management (SHRM) course. Actually the course development part of the project started well over a year ago during my Master of Online Teaching certificate practicum. Today was the official unveiling of week one of the 17 week course. A course which partnered with three others offered by the institution that employs me offers graduates a certificate in Human Resources Management (HRM). Personally, I have always been concerned about using the word "certificate" because it can be misunderstood and construed as competition with the Human Resources Certification Institutes's (HRCI) "certification". However, I can tell you that competition is certainly not the motive here. Honestly, this is something that can help prepare one to take the HRCI certification exams. Although, I still re...
