Will I See You at ILSHRM13?

I sure hope to see you at ILSHRM13 and hear about your SHRM related membership and volunteer experiences! The first half of the year has been extremely successful for the Membership Advisory Committee (MAC) for which I am one of five members. Illinois is one of ten states I represent in the North Central Region.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you in Illinois for participating in the Spring MAC survey that assisted us in our meetings with the SHRM, SHRM Foundation, and HRCI boards just prior to the annual conference in Chicago in June.  The following are links to all of the MAC related communications I have produced so far this year.   MAC Meetings with "the Boards" Feedback http://donnarogershr.blogspot.com/2013/07/mac-board-meeting-feedback.html SHRM (NCR) North Central Region MAC Update http://donnarogershr.blogspot.com/2013/06/shrm-ncr-north-central-region-mac-update.html 1st Offical SHRM NCR MAC Update http://donnaroger...

Compensation: Numbers or a Head Game?

Is compensation a numbers or a head game?   I think it is a little bit of both, and here is why.   My story with comp starts when I was just in high school and college.   I really wanted to go into accounting because I thought that numbers were fascinating.   I had taken every single business class in high school and had intended to earn a Business Administration degree because I really didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life back then.   My dream was to be business women wearing suits, making decisions, and managing people.   What that actually looked like in terms of industry of specific field in business, I had no idea. While in college I had to take intermediate accounting, statistics and calculus as well as higher level classes.   Intermediate Accounting was just not fun and I ended up stopping at that point and changing my major.   I had finished my statistics class and my calculus but I didn’t move on to the higher level ma...

Accommodating Employees Who Serve as Senior Caregivers

Aging population impacts business operations and its bottom line due to the effects of senor care-giving on staff. The average worker will spend more years caring for a senior than they will care for children. Care-giving falls on women more often than it does on men. How does this issue impact your business and what can you do to ameliorate its effects? The senior population is large enough that it is statistically improbable that any employee could avoid care-giving issues. These events most often occur for employees in their 40’s 50’s and 60’s. To date, there are no “Senior Lamaze” classes to prepare adult children for this role and its management. While couples have nine months to prepare for a baby, the role of senior care-giver usually begins with an emergency telephone call. The surprise leads to an adrenaline rush as our bodies prepare for fight or flight. Prolonged exposure to stress causes deleterious health effects. Thus, your bottom line health care costs can be improved by...
