HR Training Over Lunch ONLINE in July

I will be co-hosting with the UIS Continuing & Professional Education department a summer HR Workshop Series.  Each week a different topic will be presented covering COVID Workplace topics the first three weeks with the last two weeks focusing on helping employers meet the Workplace Transparency Act compliance training requirement by year-end.  Here is what is in store for the next five weeks for all those who register, grab a lunch, and sit down at their home or office computer. COVID Training Thursday from Noon-1p.m. 7/9 - Noon -1pm HR2033  Encouraging and Maintaining Remote Employee Engagement – COVID 19 sent over 68% of employees home for at least two months and many of them are still there working day in and day out either permanently or until there is an antidote for the virus.  So in the meantime, what is a manager to do when it comes to keeping those employees motivated, productive, and engaged in the workplace? We will di...

My First State Conference Prezi

As I  publish this post, I noticed how long it has been since I wrote anything on here and all the blame is on my crazy schedule since the conference season started and the semester began. My last post was about ILSHRM in August.  Since then I have attended three additional state conferences and the SHRM Thought Leaders Retreat and SHRM Strategy conference. So while this post is about KSSHRM, I am also grateful to WISHRM and MNSHRM as well!  So my first ever State Conference presentation was indeed at KSSHM... Whoo Hoo! I am humbled and ecstatic to have had the gracious privilege of presenting in front of my peers at the Kansas State SHRM conference recently at the Overland Park Convention Center in Kansas City, KS.  Although, my trip was quick and we ran out of time to cover everything planned, I am confident that I made a difference for some who may have either been reassured of their own process or had little to no experience with the topic. The proof was in...

2013 1st Official NCR SHRM MAC Update

It's been a pleasure serving ten (10) fantastic states full of energetic volunteers and members of the professional Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) over the last five months as the North Central Membership Advisory Representative (aka MAC Rep) .  On Monday, my fellow MAC reps and I will be headed to SHRM Headquarters in D.C. to decipher and organize feedback we have received via meetings, conference calls, and survey's to prepare our message to the SHRM Board .  We will be meeting with them just prior to the Annual SHRM Conference (aka #SHRM13) in Chicago next month.  Please click here to watch the 16 minute screencast we have developed to share current stats and goals related to membership and volunteerism especially in the North Central Region.  The update includes the SHRM 4 pillar strategy, CHRO & global initiatives, star and superstar chapter and state council statistics, student conference, and much more. Feel free to contact me via this ...

HR & Religious Institutions

Have you ever thought of your place of WORSHIP as a workplace?  Well it is!  I just did some sexual harassment (they called it sexual ethics) training at a religious establishment earlier this year and heard stories about how pastors where taking advantage of their female EMPLOYEE's.  It was not overt and not the Quid Pro Quo type but it would defiantly fall into "HOSTILE WORKPLACE".  One of my students recently wrote a paper touching on all the things an institution of this nature would need to know about HR.  I felt his application was so on target that I sought his permission to post on this site.   What Should Non-Human Resource Professionals Know about Doing Human Resources in Religious Institutions by Benjamin Keller University of Illinois, Springfield Management 431, Section B Professor Donna Rogers March 3, 2013 Revised: April 10, 2013 What Should a Non-Human Resource Professional Know about Human Resources i...

What is the MAC? A "SHRM" Term

Rebecca, Donna, Paula, Deb, Kristine As we approach the 5th annual SHRM Regional Leadership Summit to commence this week at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort in Phoenix, AZ , I am reminded of the most common question I heard muttered about during the last SHRM Leadership conference in November.  I think the reason I heard it more so this year than any other was because I was attending MAC (membership advisory committee) meetings as was my four peers whom are pictured to the left.  So when we explained where we were heading, we heard the same question: "What is the MAC?" The question does not surprise me at all because when I was a chapter leader, I had no idea what the state council was let alone the MAC.  Of course, back in those days it was called the Area Council or something like that.  Anyway, it's been a few months since I promised to write a blog post answering that very question so here it is.  Honestly, SHRM does a good job of explai...

Calling All Strategic HR Mgt Contributors

The 2nd in a series about Strategic Human Resources Management: This is the second in a series of posts related to the Strategic Human Resources Management course I am teaching here at the University of Illinois Springfield.  This is a shout out to all those I have researched and the students will be researching who are considered by others as contributors to the field.  In addition, it is my way of asking for advice, information, and suggestion on who else might be out there that I have yet to run across. Since the names will be researched and papers will be written on each of them individually to learn more about the field and what contributions have been made, I am specifically searching out those who have published or speak regularly about the topic.  So if you have a moment please comment with any insight you may have and/or share this blog post with others you think may be helpful.  In the meantime, here is our first stab at a shout out for Strategic HRM co...
